Content Management Systems

A website can quickly become out of date if it isn't maintained with new content. Although a maintenance/update contract can be agreed upon, often it isn't feasible, economically or time-wise. A Content Management SystemA Content Management System is a web-based administration area for your website, where you, the client, can update your own content, without having to learn complex coding languages. is implemented, to allow the client update their own content.

Accessibility

According to the National Disability Authority (NDA), Irish public policy includes requirements for government department websites to conform to Priority Levels 1 and 2 of the W3C WCAG 1.0 (see www.accessit.nda.ie/policy_and_legislation.html). Companies who have received directly or indirectly loans or funding from the government also fall under the definition of 'public body'.

By default, all websites I create, conform to Priority Level 1 (as above). Further accessibility work can be done to ensure Priority Levels 2 and 3 are achieved for your site. Source of paragraphs 1 and 2

Do you Google?

Google Analytics is a statistics application, available for free. It is installed on all new sites.

Web Standards?

Using web standards (XHTMLXHTML ('XML HyperText Markup language') is markup language which is used to 'tag' your content so it can be read by your web browser. It is a more strict version of HTML, CSSCascading StyleSheets style your content from an external source, which is seperate to the content. Seperating content from the style information allows for screen readers, Google bots and anyone with stylesheets turned off to access your content., DOM ScriptingDOM Scripting is the use of a standardised version of JavaScript to add really nice effects to your website without affecting how the content is accessed) allows for your website to be accessed by the largest possible audience.

For development purposes, PHPPHP is a server-side programming language, allowing for some really useful web programming. PHP stands for, confusingly, 'PHP: Hypertext Processor' and Ruby on RailsRuby on Rails is a programming framework for developing really complex web applications. Ruby is the programming language, Rails is the Framework are used.
